Seahawks cut LenDale White, who faces a drug suspension - Shutdown Corner
Just a month after they exchanged fourth- and sixth-round draft picks with the Tennessee Titans for running back LenDale White(notes), the Seattle Seahawks have released the USC alum. The Seahawks were thought to be interested in White's services for two reasons — new head coach Pete Carroll coached White at USC, and they lack a goal-line back or a bruising first-down back on the roster.
Despite the cast that White slimmed down to 220 pounds and was in the best shape of his football career, there were rumblings within the front office that White, who ran for 2,349 yards and 24 touchdowns in four seasons with the Titans, wasn't performing to the level expected by Carroll and general manager John Schneider. Schneider expressed the reason for the release like so: "It became apparent at this time that LenDale was not ready to be a member of the Seahawks. It just did not appear to be the right fit at this point in our program. We wish LenDale all the best with his future."
What we then learned, per Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network, was that White is facing a four-game suspension for a violation of the NFL's substance-abuse policy. No further details were available. According to La Canfora, the Seahawks were aware of White's possible suspension when they traded for him, and that was not the reason he was cut.
It's possible that the Seahawks hoped and expected that White would become a part of the team only to be disappointed and surprised by his work ethic. I would maintain that it's also possible that this move, coming as early in the preseason process as it does, is as much about sending a message to the team, media and fans about the New Pete Carroll as anything else.
Carroll is a self-aware guy and always has been — few coaches at any level are as astute when it comes to public perceptions — and he had to know the reputation that followed him back into the NFL from his decade at USC. A player's coach, a bit of a milquetoast, a guy that professional veterans wouldn't take seriously. But in cutting a player that he not only coached in college but also dealt for in his first draft back in the NFL, Carroll's telling the world that nobody, including the coach himself, is on scholarship. He has to get his new team to buy in, and this is one way to go.
As for White, who's always been up against it from a commitment perspective, this is a major blow. When the coach who benefited from your collegiate production casts you aside, that sends a very strong message to the rest of the league.

Football in Texas is quite a treat
Last Saturday offered one of the final warm afternoons of the year. SMU and Texas also played home games that day, and nationally ranked Texas A&M and Nebraska battled in College Station.
All were reasons to stay away from Cowboys Stadium. And yet 40,000 people showed up for a high school football game.
"Were there really 40,000 people there?" a fan asked about the Euless Trinity-Allen game. "Is that the most ever?"
No, it's only the most since last year, when Southlake Carroll and Allen attracted a similar crowd. There was a crowd of more than 46,000 for a game four years ago, and next month, the crowd for the state championship games at Cowboys Stadium could break the state record for attendance of 49,953 set in 1977.
So what does this all lead to on Thanksgiving?
Well, today is about giving thanks. It's about appreciating the blessings of health, family and living in this country. Those are all much higher priorities than anything related to sports, but it's easy to sing the praises of Texas high school football.
High school football is wonderful anywhere in the country, whether at a tiny outpost or at a school that resembles a small college, but it's different here. It's bigger, it's better, and can unify a community like few other things.
And it grabs fans at an early age. My 5-year-old son, Cooper, attended his first high school football game this year. It wasn't a matchup of powerhouses, but he was wowed by the experience.
Now playing catch with a football in the backyard isn't enough. Cooper must recreate a football game, with a band playing, officials blowing whistles and a public-address announcer. Before each "game," he and his brothers have to gather in one corner of the yard and pretend to run through an inflatable tunnel.
His visit to a game made an impression, obviously. And Texas high school football also makes an impression on those from outside the Lone Star State. A few years ago, I talked with 68-year-old Jim Wyckoff of Fairfax, Va., while he was attending his first Texas high school football game.
He flew into Texas specifically to see a game here.
"Texas has always been known as a great football state," he told me. "I've kind of dreamed of seeing what it's like."
Wyckoff said got goose bumps at the game. He called it "a moving experience."
Just imagine if he'd been at the Carroll-Trinity game in 2006 that drew 46,339 fans to Texas Stadium. Riley Dodge was Carroll's quarterback then, and now that he's a quarterback at UNT, he tells college teammates what it was like to play in one of the biggest high school games ever.
The teammates, especially those from outside of Texas, are stunned that nearly 50,000 people were at the game.
"I try to explain to them about Texas high school football," Dodge says.
It can be hard to explain.
But around here, it's easy to experience. And as we stuff ourselves with turkey and prepare for two days stuffed with playoff games, that's reason to give thanks.

Officer David Blake is remembered for quiet determination on job, hard hits on football field
Some wore their SWAT battle dress uniforms, while others were in shirts from the Chicago Enforcers, the Chicago Police Department's football team.
They had shown up Wednesday to talk about slain SWAT Officer David Blake, their co-worker and teammate who was shot and killed while off-duty Monday night on the Southwest Side.
And when they were asked to pose for a photo together, all 16 stood together in sad silence for a guy who didn't say much himself but left a big impression.
Blake was quiet and unassuming, yet he made some of the hardest hits on the football field. He was laid back and low-key but wanted to drive the large armored vehicle just acquired for the SWAT team. He was a bit reserved but did every job asked of him.
"We're a police family, and we're a football family, and on this job, family is everything,'' said Sgt. Timothy Kusinski, who coached Blake. "And he was definitely part of the family.''
Blake's slaying remains a mystery. He was found inside his SUV in the 2900 block of West Seipp Street, a tucked-away street several miles from his home.
A cigarette was dangling from his mouth when the body was discovered. The SUV's windows were up, suggesting the shots were fired from inside, several sources have said. His wallet and weapon were also recovered, raising doubts about whether robbery was a motive.
Detectives were continuing with several interviews Wednesday, and no one was in custody.
Blake, 45, grew up in the Beverly neighborhood. He had been on the police force 15 years.
During the last five years on the SWAT team, he found a spot in the department that he'd hoped would be permanent, said his partner, Norell Liboy.
"He said this is something he would do for a lifetime,'' Liboy said.
Liboy said Blake earned a commercial driver's license required to drive the newly acquired armored vehicle. "He loved driving that vehicle,'' Liboy said.
Blake was on the department football team for about five years.
Coaches and teammates said he stood out on the football field for a couple of reasons. He hit hard, for one, enjoying the "licks'' he could get in. But he was also a 45-year-old man on a team of mostly 30-somethings.
But it didn't matter, said Kusinski, the Enforcer's assistant coach.
"We thought he was 10 years younger, to be honest,'' Kusinski said. "He loved being part of the team. … When he made a big play, he had a big smile on his face. You knew he was happy. You knew he liked what he was doing.''
Blake played fullback and on special teams on the Enforcers, which plays for charity — including for the families of slain officers.
Kusinski said the team will now be considering how to honor Blake as they head into the spring season.
"One of the reasons we do this is for the love of football,'' he said. "But we raise a lot of money for charity, and we also support fallen officers. That's why this is such a switch for us."
Politician in Redskins country lied about playing for Cowboys
Michael Vaughn is a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and represents Prince George's County 24th district, an area which includes FedEx Field, the home of the Washington Redskins. Despite living deep in the heart of Redskins country, Vaughn boasted on his website that he played for the Dallas Cowboys for three years.Big mistake.
A recent investigation by Dave McKenna of the Washington City Paper uncovered the fact that Vaughn never set foot on any field wearing that famous Cowboys star. Through a spokeswoman, the Cowboys said there is no record of Vaughn ever playing for them or any other NFL team.
Bigger mistake.
Since McKenna's report went out last week, Vaughn has gone step-by-step through the political crisis playbook. His first step was to deny, deny, deny. The delegate insisted to McKenna that he was signed as a free agent in 1980, despite evidence to the contrary. A single, ambiguous newspaper clipping was his only proof.
Next up was the tried and true method of distraction with inconsequential facts. Vaughn said he was a member of the NFL Players Alumni Association, a group whose eligibility requirements seem to be only that you have a working credit card. If you'd like, you can join too for $150.
Then Vaughn tried to blame the issue on someone else (the webmaster who made his site), pulled the offending sentence (he says he removed it immediately; McKenna claims he waited six days), released a damage control statement blasting the City Paper's report (it was "unresearched (sic) and inaccurate"), basically blamed the media for all of society's ills ("this incident demonstrates the growing problem that we have in the 24/7 media culture") and, finally, vowed to "explore" how the error was made in the first place.
But if the report was "unresearched and inaccurate," then what's he exploring? And why did he take the sentence about playing for the Cowboys off his bio? Either McKenna is right and Vaughn didn't play for them or the bio was right and Vaughn did. Later on Vaughn admitted he didn't play for three years but that he practiced with the team for five months, yet he's still exploring something. The delegate doth protest too much methinks.

There hasn't been any political fallout yet in Vaughn's district, possibly because the story hasn't gained enough traction with major media outlets or possibly because voters are satisfied with the delegate's performance and don't care about a white lie on a website. That's what makes Vaughn's reaction so bizarre; if he had removed the Cowboys blurb and moved on, nobody would be talking about it. By extending the story, he's running the risk of having more of his constituents hear about his penchant for tall tales.
We've gotten away from the most important question though, which is why someone would lie about playing for the Cowboys, especially in the D.C. area? That's like running for mayor of Berkeley and saying you once worked for Sarah Palin. Or wearing a Michigan sweatshirt to a job interview in Columbus. Or putting an easily disputed fact on your website and getting into a fight with the media four months before an election. In other words, not too smart.

The agent for Darrelle Revis(notes) presented the Jets with a new contract offer Tuesday. That's good news, right? At least they're talking and getting things hammered out?Not so much, as it turns out. Not that they couldn't be a good team without Revis. And despite what Mr. Johnson said, we're still a long, long way from the All-Pro cornerback actually sitting out the season.
But the guy is a legitimate difference-maker; as in, his absence would directly lead to the subtraction of a substantial amount of wins. A player of his caliber is the difference between being merely good, and being Super Bowl good.
Revis is currently scheduled to make $1 million for this season, and that would be an appropriate figure, if he was the nickelback for the St. Louis Rams, his left leg was 11 inches shorter than his right, he had a hook for a hand after a loose seal attack, and he played wearing an eyepatch.
As it stands, though, he is the best defensive player in the NFL,Polo burberry, so a salary of $1 million might be a little low. But that's only if you want to play in the Super Bowl. If you don't, then sure, by all means, keep refusing to pay him.

The Colts don't haze rookies. Should your team
Between Dez Bryant's initial refusal to carry pads and Tim Tebow's wacky haircut, the subject of hazing has gotten a lot of attention this offseason.It seems to be a commonly accepted practice around the league, and it seems like most teams either condone it, or are at least willing to look the other way.
Not all teams, though. There's at least one team out there that doesn't let rookie hazing happen. Would it change your mind at all about hazing if you knew that this haze-free team was an annual fixture in the playoffs and one of the league's model franchises for stability and consistency?
Peyton Manning(notes) talked to Fanhouse's John Oehser about hazing:
"You've seen all the highlights with the rookie hazing and haircuts,holland football shirts," Manning said Tuesday. "We don't do that around here, because we don't treat the guys like rookies. We expect those guys to play this year and to play well."So that's another way to go with rookies. Clearly, it's a policy that works well for the Colts, and that's great. Whatever works for the ballclub.

I'm going to stop short of believing, though, that the Colts are good, year-in, year-out, because they don't shave obscene things into the heads of rookies. Call me crazy, but I choose to believe that the fact that they have one of the all-time greats at quarterback is a much bigger factor.
Hazing is what it is: a juvenile activity that amuses the veterans and subjects the rookies to some mild humiliation. As long as it stops there, and no one's physically hurt, or made to feel like an outcast or an inferior species, I don't see the harm. As long as it's done with a modicum of responsibility, respect and common sense, then I'm fine with taking a "boys will be boys" approach.
Eschewing hazing all together may be the more mature approach, but I can't think of any examples where it's either really helped or really hurt a team.
